Adoptable Dogs

Dog of the week – Obi

Location: Gauteng

Obi is an approx 1 year old, male GSP or Vizsla cross. And he is starting his journey to his new family. Together with the current owner we have put some guesses in the hat as to this DNA but most combinations come up with some GSP and/or Vizsla in there.

Obi is a very energetic and happy, 40kg boy. He loves and demands attention. He loves to play and run and chase anything and everything. He has been to puppy school and obeys most basic demands and is eager to continue learning – although he does loose focus when he is very excited. He is very protective of the family and will fit in well with a family that is home often and want to play with him all the time.

Obi however “sensitive” to strangers that come into his space and have nipped at people before (we always tell all we know about the dogs up for adoption through us). Once he relaxes, he loves to play and interact with people. This we believe can be addressed with proper positive behavior modification training. However, this might not be ideal for “first time dog owners”.

He is good with other dogs of all sizes. He grew up with cats but get very excited and sometimes scares the cats and wants to chase them. He barks at livestock. Obi could not care less about noises, fireworks or thunderstorms.

Obi needs encouragement to get into a car but settles quickly once the journey starts (again something that could probably be address through proper training).

Adoption notes

We aim to match dogs in need and potential adopting homes. Your specific preference in dogs might not be available at the time. Please consider one of the available dogs or monitor our Facebook and Website for new dogs becoming available for adoption.

We require all other pets in the adoptive home to be sterilised – special consideration will be given where pets cannot be sterilised based on medical motivation (e.g. age or medical condition).

We might not have any information about most of our dog’s bloodline or breeding.

Please consider the following terms and conditions when applying:

Adoption notes:

  • If you are interested in any of the dogs in the care of GSP Rescue SA, please contact Kate Davies-Benade, Rolien Prinsloo, Lianie Dalby or Tine-Marie Mudde via GSP Rescue SA  with any questions or to request an adoption application form. You can also complete the adoption form electronically by clicking on the button underneath each dog’s photo.
  • Meet and greets / play dates can be arranged where practical.
  • Completed adoption form and full home checks apply. If you are in the same city / town, a play date with existing dogs would also take place.
  • We will make every effort to arrange / assist for transportation (at cost of new home, if applicable) for re-homing in South Africa.
  • An adoption fee of R1 200 per dog enable us place dogs that are sterilised, micro chipped, vaccinated (including kennel cough), and dewormed. In the instance of pups younger than 12 months, the adoption fee will be R1700.00, which is kept by GSP Rescue SA. This will be contributed toward the sterilisation when the pup is old enough. Strict sterilisation contracts will apply for dogs younger than 12 months. Please see note above for adoption fee increase.

NOTE: We cannot let distance stand in the way of a dog finding a good, loving family and we will consider homes in other provinces. We will assist with transport arrangements as much as we possibly can.

The cost of any flights and road transport to the new home will be for the adopting family’s account and does not replace the adoption fee.

Available for adoption from GSP Rescue SA

The Lasses

Sia’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

3 year old Sia says she longs for her forever family. She has been returned to rescue because she prefers to be an only dog and that is not her fault. Sia is amazing with children and needs a little human or two who she can cuddle with. She is super intelligent, energetic and very friendly with people. She can be an escape artist if the opportunity presents itself, so she will need a secure yard and gates. We would prefer a home with no other dogs or cats.

PS. Sia lost her one eye in a shooting incident, but she is just a normal, happy, loving GSP with a huge personality and loads of character.

Storm’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Beautiful Storm is looking for her forever home.
Storm is the sweetest 4 year old GWP X GSP. She was surrendered to Wollies Animal Shelter that agreed for us to take her over. We have no background on her.

What we I can tell you is that she was a bit shell shocked when we collected her and just want to stay 5 mm from humans, that made for an interesting time to try and take photos of her.
Something else that is painfully obvious is that she has had multiple litters.

Her original owners did say that she was not good with small dogs and cats (although she showed little interest in the shelter cats when we picked her up).

We will let her de-compress and then see how she is with other dogs.

She is currently at Boavida kennels.

Chocolate’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

We welcome 18 month old Chocolate into GSP Rescue’s care. Chocolate and her sister was surrendered as they are a formidable double act. Sweet and lovely girls …..together they were double trouble. ABSOLUTELY NO CATS OR SMALL DOGS OR ANY SMALL ANIMALS. Chocolate got into a lot of trouble for her abilities to “ hunt” Although Chocolate and her sister Tanya was surrendered together we feel it is in their best interest to be separated as they “ gang “ up. As long as there is a same size friend ……. meet and greets will be essential to make sure she fits in. There is no known phobias.

Tanya’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

We welcome 18 month old Tanya into GSP Rescues care. Tanya and her sister was surrendered as they are a formidable double act. Sweet and lovely girls …..together they were double trouble. ABSOLUTELY NO CATS OR SMALL DOGS OR ANY SMALL ANIMALS. Tanya got into a lot of trouble for her abilities to “ hunt” Although Tanya and her sister Chocolate was surrendered together we feel it is in their best interest to be separated as they “ gang “ up. As long as there is a same size friend ……. meet and greets will be essential to make sure she fits in. There is no known phobias.

Chockie’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Chockie, 13 year old female.

Dear Chockie or Chocolate is in need of a retirement home (owners are emigrating).

Her current owner writes: “Chockie is a friendly and loving dog. Very protective of me her owner but listens very well if I say: No, leave and sit or lay down.

She loves to be outdoors, but will come into the house or office if it is warm or if she want something to snack on. Then she will put her head on your lap and look straight into your eyes.

She has a good rat and snake catching record. She saved my life when she bit a snake just behind a door were I was about to go out of.

At this stage she is mostly laying in the office with me during the day.

Chockie loves to go for a walk and do well on the leash.
She were never been beaten of kicked in her life, so please she will not understand that kind of behavior if someone want to hurt her.

She loves to put her head on you and ask for attention and love.

She is not aggressive, only barking when someone step into her territory and will stand next to you or between you and someone else and do the smell thing.

She loves children, she grew up with my young son and teenage daughter.

So she does well with other dogs. She is living with two small pinchers and one Jack Russell. She is not aggressive toward other dogs, except with her food. Livestock no problem, we had cows and sheep. But she definitively is not in love with cats.

She do not like gun shots. She not afraid of thunderstorms, but please no fireworks.

Please find people that are living in a big yard or on a plot. That’s all Chockie knows and she needs space to run around where she could still be useful for people and chase after rats. I will rather see her with people that are still active and wants to go for walks every now and then.”

Lola’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Lola is a pure bred, 3 and a half year old (English) Pointer. She is currently on the West Rand of Johannesburg.

She is a friendly and active girl and her favorite past time is chasing birds. She is great with children and other dogs, has never been with cats (but will probably not be good with them).

She is unfortunately not house trained and has not had any training – but naturally points birds.

One of our team members will go and meet her next week and then we will be able to tell you a little more about this princess.

Lola would love to be part of a loving, active family. A more experienced dog owner should be able to take her through any problems with house training with ease.

Marley’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Sweet Marley finds herself homeless again. Through no fault of her own, things did not work out with the family who adopted her and she returned to rescue.

Marley is an 2 year old German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP).

If you want a girl who is active, loving, playful, cuddly and smart, the maybe Marley is your girl. She LOVES treats so much that she will sit for them. She even thinks her dewormer and tick & flea treatment are treats.

Life is an adventure for Marley and she lives in the moment. She will need a family who will take her in and let her share in all their daily and fun activities. She seems to be fine with large well socialised dogs, so meets and greets will be essential. She is amazing with small and big humans.

We will NOT place her in home with smaller dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits or livestock.
Bonnie’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Meet sweet 7 year old Bonnie. She is a sedate, loving girl with her people and loves kids of all ages. Bonnie needs a home with no or large dogs and no cats and NO small dogs (or access to them). She is ideally looking for a relatively calm (for GSP) home

A family who has a large garden and believe that dogs are part of their lives, will be ideal for Bonnie, with a double gated system as she loves to chase out an open gate.

Apart from a hip problem for which the vet recommended no medication at this stage, Bonnie is healthy and still active and fully mobile. She is well behaved, house trained and enjoys car rides.

The Lads

Spot’s Profile

Reserved

Spot is looking for his forever family. He is a 3 to 4 year old Springer Spaniel x GSP. What a delightful little guy he is. He ticks all the boxes:
Excellent manners
Walks and runs well on leash (ideal training companion for runners or cyclists)
Loves humans of all shapes and sizes
Loves to cuddle
Has a happy go lucky attitude
Low prey drive, could potentially live with cats. Proper introduction essential.
Gets on well with other dogs.

The kennel staff describe him as a lekker dog.

The thing with Spot is his fear of thunderstorms. He can scale a 2.5 meter wall during thunderstorms if left outside alone. A secure yard is therefor a must. Walls higher than 2.5 meters are desirable. We know it’s a tall order.

His ideal family is active and will take him for regular runs (so he can show of his leash skills). They would also include him in all their family adventures.

Dakota’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

We are proud to introduce 18 month old Dakota , a gorgeous English Pointer. Dakota gets along with most dogs, big and small. Cats are not known to him but I suspect he may chase them. Dakota loves children. Dakota has no noise phobias . He is just the sweetest boy, he loves to run and play with dogs of his own energy levels. Dakota would love an active family who can continue training him and will make him a much loved member of the family.

Bruno’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Bruno was adopted from GSP Rescue SA in 2017. He was badly abused in his first home and had a lot of issues to deal with. We always believed with love and the right environment, Bruno would trust people again. Sadly, circumstances for his adoptive mom changed and we have to find Bruno another home. Here is what his mom has to say about him:

“He has come such a long way since I adopted him. Bruno has bloomed into an extremely happy dog! He is now approximately 8 years old. He loves playing with his “stuffed animals”, fetching them and running around in circles until he finally brings it to you in order for you to throw it again. His favorite hobby is chasing birds and lizzards! He gets used to new people much quicker than he did before. Trips to the vet is much easier. He even lets little children play with him and touch his face (previously he never allowed anyone near his face). He has learned that it’s okay to be a dog and be happy! He loves to go on walks and he is truly an amazing boy! He is so obedient and never gets into any trouble. He loves to be around people and part of the conversation. He likes to also take part in conversations with you (using his doggy language) and is a real Sweetheart! He doesn’t even consider running out the gate, even when it is open. He is very alert and will protect you when he feels you are in danger. He does his rounds around the wall every now and then to make sure everything is still okay. He is not very vocal and will only bark when there is a reason. He sleeps inside on his own bed. He knows exactly where his bed is, he knows that he’s only allowed to use the back door to come in, and only goes as far as his bed. He is also more than happy to sleep outside when I’m not at home. He copes very well with being alone when I’m at work. Honestly, I have never had any problems with him!!!! He is the best dog I’ve ever met! He is a joy to have around and I love him to bits!!!! Honestly, I can’t even imagine why anyone would ever want to hurt him, he is the PERFECT dog! He listens well when he is off lead in an open area. He is afraid of loud noises and thunder storms, but hides instead of getting agitated and trying to escape. I was warned that he doesn’t get on with other dogs, however he made friends with an adult female GSP one December holiday at the doggy hotel and they were inseparable. He definitely does not like cats! He is great with traveling in a car as well! He is extremely afraid of water however. I guess water might have been used in a negative way in the past.

All I want for Bruno is to find a home where he can continue to be happy and where he will be loved! I’m willing to take him for meet and greets in Gauteng area if anyone is interested. He has a huge igloo dog house and a dog car hammock as well as plenty of blankets that will be available to his new owners.
My heart breaks every time that I’m reminded that he will no longer be a part of my life. The least that I can do is make sure that he continues to have an amazing life ahead of him.

Dexter’s Profile

Reserved.

Currently in KZN, 4 year old Dexter can relocate to the right home. Dexter is used to cats but we cannot guarantee how he will react to strange cats. Dexter chases birds and monkeys so at a guess I will prefer no smaller animals. Dexter is a great explorer and will take his chance if the gate is open. He also needs some work on his recall, which is not very good…..Dexter has no noise phobias. Dexter is used to bigger dogs and his current companion Patches is also up for adoption ADOPTION

Patches’ Profile

Location: KZN

Currently in KZN, 3 year old Patches, can travel if a suitable home is found. Patches is familiar with cats but we cannot guarantee how he will react to strange felines. Patches is not used to small dogs and prefer the company of same size dogs . Currently him and his partner Dexter are looking for a home…. together would be a bonus but can be separated if need be. Patches tends to be the dominant male and can be jealous if he is not the centre of attention. It is more than this love bug can bear….. Patches will be sterilised before being adopted. Patches is afraid of noises and thunderstorm.

Chester’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

He has arrived! Ever so handsome Chester is months old. He is friendly, loving, energetic and playful. In other words he is a typical young GSP. Chester gets on well with other dogs, loves big and small humans, but we do not know about cats. Chester needs a home who understands the physical and mental needs of a GSP. He would for his family to take him for obedience training and invest time in stimulating his young, eager mind so that he can channel his energy and intelligence in the right direction. Chester can be a bit of an escape artist if he gets the opportunity.

Please note: We do not know who his breeder is, nor if he can be trained as a gundog.

Moose’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Beautiful 4 year old Moose is ready to join his forever family. Moose is a big, lovable Snuggle Bunny of note. He loves people big and small…. he is used to small dogs but unfortunately not fond of cats….He was a perfect gentleman in the car but is not good with walking on a leash….he needs someone who can commit some time and energy into training him. At the moment he is just Moose the Goose…. just a happy chap. Let’s make Goose’s stay with us short…. if you want an awesome love bug…. here’s your man……

Max’s Profile

Gauteng, but can relocate

Max is a 4,5 year old , super adorable Lab x English Pointer. Max was adopted from us in 2017 but sadly had to be returned due to change in circumstances.
Max is loving and curious boy, prefers children that is a little bigger (+10 y old). He is better with larger breed female dogs and is a danger to cats. He is fully housetrained and knows basic commands. He is an amazing passenger in the car. He will benefit a lot (like all dogs) from some training.
Max needs a family who will love him and in return he will be your loyal and faithful companion forever.

Benji’s Profile

Location: Gauteng

Letter from Benji’s foster humans:
Benji is a fun-loving and very energetic boy, just over 2 years old. We think his “off” / “rest” switch might be a little broken. He has been in our home as a foster since October 2016, but need to find his own forever home soon.
He gets along well with our GSP male and Springer female – and should be fine with other K9’s as long as they can tolerate his boisterousness.
Benji is very inquisitive, enjoys human and K9 company. He plays very soft with kids.
He has put his paw to perfecting gardening so need positive stimulation to keep his eager mind and body busy. He will reward his new humans with loyal companionship if they invest in structured training with him.
The only time he lies still is when he is curled up in the home with his friends surrounding him, but he needs to make sure that our GSP is clean before going to bed, he gets licked from head to toe first.

Benji would need an experienced GSP family who knows and understands the needs of this breed. This, unfortunately, is not negotiable. Benji is not for a first time GSP owner or for the faint of heart.
